Merckx – The man – The bike.

It’s not often I get to meet a childhood hero. Even rarer to meet one at his own home, all chilled out, ready for a ride with his mates.
I’m not a road cycling fan at all but even as a kid, racing around the streets and park on my Raleigh Chopper, the thought of Eddy Merckx  blitzing people on the road wasn’t far away.

The occasion followed a chat with my buddy Léon van Bon He asked me to provide some photos of Eddy for an article in ‘Fiets‘ A Dutch cycling magazine. I knew Léon before I even knew he was a pro cyclist and part of his new career is writing and photographing for the cycling world. Of course, I was pleased to help out, even though my experience of photographing cyclists was pretty much zero.

It was a good day in the chase car, Eddy, Léon and the lads did a brisk 70-odd KM trip in and around Eddy’s home town of Meise.
